THICKEN EDGE CONCRETE FLOOR SLAB - ANCHORAGE, ALASKA
After their carport burned, Larry and Victoria Santiago desired an 800 sq ft attached
garage to their home in west Anchorage. To comply with the Anchorage Municipality
code, the Santiago's were required to install a 42" height block or concrete foundation
and footing. To save cost Nushagak Consultants in association with the Santiago's
submitted a frost protected thicken edge design as an alternate to the Municipalities
requirement. It was approved!
This design only works with a heated structure. It relies on the use of two sheets of
rigid, polystyrene insulation-one on the outside of the foundation wall and the other
laid flat on a bed of gravel at the base of the wall-to prevent freezing, which is a problem
with slab-on grade foundations in areas with frost. The insulation holds heat from the
structure in the ground under the footings and prevents heat loss from the edge of the
slab. This heat keeps the ground temperature around the footings above freezing.
The scope of work was completed by Nushagak Consultants as shown in the pictures
below. A footnote to this project was a compliment from Alaska Sand & Gravel when they
delivered the fiber reinforced concrete for the pour. They were very impressed by the
meticulous way the concrete forms were constructed and the perfect 45 degree angles of
the aggregate slopes. They delightfully admitted; "They would recommend Nushagak
Consultants to anyone". Nushagak also completed conceptual building design drawings
for the Santiago's. The Front view can be seen by clicking on the wheelbarrow below.
